Like most people, even those who work for National Right to Life, I have lots to do so that I can only watch part of the Senate Judiciary Committee’s grilling of Supreme Court nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. Fortunately you can go to C-Span and see what you’ve missed and, for the most part, read the exchanges with various senators, whether they be complimentary to the appeals court judge or actively hostile.
We knew before the confirmation hearings began that pro-abortion Senate Democrats would use Judge Gorsuch as a stand-in piñata for pro-life President Donald Trump. If you believe the likes of pro-abortion Senator Al Franken (D-Mn.), a man with a lengthy judiciary track record, who has virtually never been reversed, whom the ABA gave its highest ratings to, is someone incapable of functioning independently of the man who nominated him.
Pro-life Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who has been critical of Mr. Trump on some issues, made a very interesting point today. It was a very different time when the original Originalist, Justice Antonin Scalia, was confirmed with 98 votes and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the “bastion of liberalism on the Court,” received 96 votes.
His point was Democratic senators were clearly suggesting they would not vote to confirm because Judge Gorsuch was nominated by a Republican. Period.
Sen. Graham then said
This is what Greg Craig, the former White House counsel in the Obama Administration, said about [now Justice] Elena Kagan. She’s a progressive in the mold of Obama himself. So [current White House Chief of Staff] Reince Priebus said that Trump picked a good guy. Greg Craig, the former White Counsel, said Obama picked Elena Kagan, a progressive in the mold of Obama himself. …I knew full well what I was getting [in Kagan], and I hope you understand that you’re getting one of the most qualified conservative judges in the Country. Sen. Feinstein said her goal was to find out if you are a reasonable mainstream conservative. I would tell you, Sen. Feinstein, without any hesitation, this man is as mainstream as you will get.
