By Carol Tobias, President
We did it! After more than a year of ups and downs, doubts and excitement, we won, which means the babies won.
Right-to-lifers worked extremely hard to elect a pro-life president and maintain pro-life control in both the U.S. House and Senate.
While our opponents were stunned by disbelief, many of them came back swinging. Slate magazine carried an article the morning after the election, “White Women Sold Out the Sisterhood and the World by Voting for Trump.” Because we’re women, we were supposed to support the female candidate who supports killing babies—including girl babies– for any reason, even late in pregnancy.
Planned Parenthood, of course, reassured the country that they remain open for business. NARAL Pro-Choice America wrote, “Donald Trump’s vision for America and the policies he has proposed are a clear and present danger to women, our bodies, and our freedoms. Our charge every day is to work to ensure President-Elect Trump cannot strip away our freedoms, our rights, and our ability to chart our own destiny.”
The Washington Post, which has not tried to hide its disdain for Donald Trump over the last several months, wrote, “We hope the election winner will be a better president than we fear.”
In today’s WaPo, an op-ed could be used as an example of exaggerated hyperbole, declaring that the election was a vote against women. (The writer decided to broaden that premise, saying the election was, in effect, a vote against everyone but white men and Christian women.)
Unlike these dismal, pessimistic opinions, pro-lifers look forward to the new administration with optimism and renewed enthusiasm.
Last year, the U.S. House and Senate passed a budget reconciliation bill that would have defunded Planned Parenthood, only to have it vetoed by President Obama. Donald Trump stated throughout the campaign that as long as Planned Parenthood performs abortions, they should not receive tax dollars. You can be sure there will be renewed efforts to remove tax funding from the nation’s largest abortion provider.
As you read yesterday and today in NRL News Today, our state affiliates were very successful November 8. Thanks to all we accomplished, we will renew efforts to pass pro-life legislation in Congress as well as in the many state legislatures
And in Donald Trump we have a president-elect who has stated he will appoint pro-life judges to the Supreme Court. It is and should be of utmost importance that we change the courts and restore legal protection to unborn children.
I ask that, if you are a praying person, you pray for all our newly-(re)elected leaders for wisdom, strength, and determination to accomplish the task set before them.
The world looks brighter and more joyous than it has for a long time. Thank you for everything you did to elect pro-life candidates to so many different positions. Unborn children were the true winners in these elections.
