Bodies of two second trimester babies found in wastewater

Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant

The bodies of two babies, likely in their second trimester, were found last week at the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant in Charleston, South Carolina.

Crime scene technicians and the Charleston County Coroner’s office were called in to help with the investigation which is complicated by the fact they do not know how long the babies’ bodies were in the water, where they came from, and no way of tracing track the path of travel that culminated in the wastewater .

According to Melissa Boughton of The Post and Courier.

Charleston police responded about 4 p.m. Aug. 8 to the Plum Island Wastewater Treatment Plant on Harbor View Circle for a report that an employee had found a deceased baby. When officers arrived, they were taken to a pump station and were shown what appeared to be two “preterm babies” that had been recovered from the wastewater.

Rae Wooten, who is the Charleston County Coroner said, “We don’t have anywhere to start,” adding, “It is probably a very isolated situation.”

Tragically, finding the bodies of abandoned babies at Wastewater Treatment Facilities is not isolated. NRL News Today has reported about this all too often, most recently the Bucklin Point Wastewater Treatment Facility in East Providence, RI, where the body of a baby boy, estimated to have been 19-20 weeks fetal age old, was found in the area of the plant that separates solids from liquids.
