It seems as if each time you read about a boyfriend secretly slipping his pregnant girlfriend an abortifacient, it is sleazier and more hard-hearted than the time before.

The Daily News’ Nancy Dillon reported that after a bitter 2009 breakup with his girlfriend, who refused to abort their child, well known former Manhattan restaurant owner Joshua Woodward told the pregnant woman that “he wanted to resume their relationship and planned to be a supportive parent – but the truth was that he only wanted to get close again to force an abortion, a Los Angeles Police investigator wrote in a 2009 search warrant affidavit obtained by The News.”

What had Woodward been doing in the interim? According to the search warrant, researching the abortifacient misoprostol online.

He

typed the phrases, “ways men have forced abortions,” and “evil ways to terminate a pregnancy,” into his web search engine.

Woodward administered the drug on three occasions before the baby was prematurely delivered– once orally and twice vaginally– authorities said.

“On Oct. 18, 2009, Woodward conducted further online research about dosage and the length of time misoprostol is detectible in a person’s blood,” Dillon reported. The third time–after an intimate encounter–Woodward administered the misoprostol.

The unidentified girlfriend lost her baby about 15 hours later. She suspected something and she called police who set up a sting. Dillon wrote

“Investigators told the girlfriend to keep the miscarriage a secret and invite Woodward back over. A week later, police arrested Woodward outside her Los Angeles apartment with more misoprostol, they said.”

Dillon reported that Woodward pleaded no contest and that, according to prosecutors, “is expected to get nine years in state prison at his sentencing next year.”
