Number of abortions in Ohio drop 8.7% in 2014

By Dave Andrusko

Continuing a welcome pattern that extends back to 2001, there were fewer abortions in Ohio in 2014 than any year since the state began tracking the number of abortions in 1976.

On Wednesday, the Ohio Department of Health released data showing there were 21,186 abortion in 2014, a 8.7% decline from 2013.

“Year by year, Ohio is sowing a culture of life–a culture that is literally saving thousands of unborn babies from the painful inhumanity that is abortion,” said Stephanie Ranade Krider, executive director of Ohio Right to Life. “As more and more women choose life for their children, we’re seeing Planned Parenthood and the rest of the abortion industry pushed to the fringe of civil society. “

She added, “There’s no doubt in our minds that the culture of life is winning.”

According to Ohio Right to Life, half of the state’s abortion facilities have been shuttered or closed voluntarily since 2010. In 2014 alone, three abortion facilities closed across Ohio or stopped performing surgical abortions.

Not that abortion “providers” are giving up. The Columbus Dispatch reported yesterday that Planned Parenthood of Southwest Ohio and Women’s Med Group have sued in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati, alleging “such efforts are part of a deliberate strategy to severely limit access to abortion.”

This was a reference to the requirement NRL News Today has reported on many times–that an abortion facility have admitting privileges with a local hospital in case of emergencies.

“The clinics also are seeking to block another law which automatically suspends a facility’s license when a requested variance from the emergency agreement is denied by the state or not acted on within 60 days,” according to reporter Catherine Candisky.
