In 2014, there were 61 fewer abortions, or 8,118, compared to 8,179 abortions in 2013.
Abortions have declined in Indiana for six consecutive years. Last year’s 8,118 abortions are more than half of Indiana’s all-time high number of 16,505 abortions in 1980.
The data shows that Indiana abortion facilities are rapidly increasing the selling of chemical abortions that utilize Mifepristone and Misoprostol.
In 2012, the drug combination was reported for 1.8 percent of abortions, but in 2014, it accounted for 26.7 percent of abortions. Other procedures used in Indiana were dilation and evacuation (27 abortions) and suction curettage (5,926 abortions).
Fichter continued, “We are concerned with the growing number of chemical abortions. Women have reported horrific experiences with a chemical abortion and the Food and Drug Administration have reported serious complications and deaths. We are committed to ensuring that abortion facilities in Indiana are held to the highest medical and safety standards so that women’s health is not compromised.”
