Megan Huntsman, 39, has been charged with six counts of murder after police discovered the bodies of seven dead babies in cardboard boxes in the garage of her former home.
Her ex-husband, who had recently gotten out of prison, found the body of one baby while cleaning out the garage, the New York Daily News reported. Police found six more little corpses when they arrived. They suspect the infants were killed between 1996 and 2006, according to the Daily News’ Bill Hutchinson. The former husband is not a suspect.
Capt. Michael Roberts of the Pleasant Grove, Utah, Police Department, told Hutchinson, “My personal reaction? Just shocked. Couldn’t believe it. The other officers felt the same. They got more and more shocked each box they opened.”
It is unclear why Huntsman is charged with six counts of murder, rather than seven. It is unclear how Darren West, the ex-husband whom police believe to be the father of the infants, could not have known about the slain babies. (Roberts told Hutchinson, “That’s the million-dollar question. Amazing.”)
And it is also unclear how Huntsman’s three older daughters, aged 13 to 20, who still live in the house owned by West’s parents, could not have known their mother had been pregnant, or not see anything suspicious. Hutchinson left the girls on their own in 2011. Police say it is unknown where she has lived since.
Describing themselves as in a “state of shock and confusion,” West’s family issued a statement late Sunday that read, “We are mourning this tragic loss of life and we are trying to stay strong and help each other through this awful event.”
The Associated Press reported that
“Neighbors told the AP they were shocked and horrified by the accusations of what went on inside the home. None of them even knew Huntsman was pregnant in recent years.
“The family members seemed like nice people and good neighbors, said Aaron and Kathie Hawker, who live next door.”
