Ending late abortions when babies can feel pain
By Don Parker, NRLC Development Director
Tuesday was a landmark day for the unborn children we work to protect! The U.S. House of Representatives brought our nation one step closer to being the compassionate society we strive to be when it passed the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act to ban late abortions when the unborn baby is developed enough to feel pain.
No compassionate nation slaughters its children, born or unborn. But as the recent trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell shows, the line between killing children before and after birth gets blurred when discussing late abortions. Gosnell’s method was to deliver babies to birth and then murder them outside the womb.
Columnists such as Kirsten Powers and Margaret Carlson (who generally supports legal abortion) have pointed out there is no logical difference between killing babies of this age inside or outside the womb. Yet in many states, there is no law protecting these babies, or if there is a law, it is ineffective because it contains broad “health” exceptions. That is why National Right to Life so strongly supports legislation to provide nationwide protection for unborn children who are capable of feeling pain.
Testimony in the House subcommittee that first heard the bill addressed the medical facts about fetal pain and how these gruesome late abortions are performed. These brutalities should never happen in a society that calls itself civilized, nor should they ever happen to any baby anywhere.
Every baby deserves our protection. As we work for the day that the Supreme Court will let us protect the life of every unborn baby, let us now pass every protection the Supreme Court will allow, and that starts with ending the barbarity of killing unborn babies when they can experience such excruciating pain.
Now that the House has passed the bill, we need your help to educate the American public about the pain an unborn baby can feel in an abortion. This will not be a quick campaign. The Obama Administration has threatened to veto the bill, and we will face fierce opposition in the Senate.
But like the fight to ban partial-birth abortions, which took several years, we will fight for however long it takes to get Congress to pass, and a president to sign this bill into law.
In the meantime, we need to educate. We plan to run TV, radio and internet ads about fetal pain, and about the Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act. We need to tell every American how their members of Congress voted on this common sense, compassionate bill. And we need to get those citizens to tell their Senators and the White House to vote to protect those who face the abortionist’s knife.
Your support will help us accomplish that. A donation of $150 or more could buy a television ad; a donation of $25 or more can buy a radio or internet ad on the issue of fetal pain.
We will never give up the fight to protect these vulnerable babies from the atrocity of late abortions. Please show your support for our campaign by clicking below and making a generous donation today to help us educate Americans about the pain of abortion, and to end this inhumane brutality in our great land.
