Last week, NRL News Today reported on how Lee Martin Konnerth killed his pregnant girlfriend and their baby when he shot her in the back as she fled out the door. To avoid a trial on first degree murder, Konnerth pled guilty to two counts of second degree murder.
We began the story by commenting, “It doesn’t get much worse than this.” Then I read a story from the Bellingham Herald, a Washington newspaper, with this headline: “Everson rapist gets prison for impregnating girl, making her get abortion.”
Last Thursday, Whatcom County Superior Court Judge Charles Snyder sentenced Luis Gonzalez-Jose, 31, for impregnating a preteen girl and then forcing her to have an abortion at a Planned Parenthood clinic. The cover story Gonzales-Jose had the girl recite when she got to the PPFA clinic in August 2012?
“She told staff members that her 14-year-old boyfriend impregnated her, but she couldn’t give the boy’s name or address,” reported Caleb Hutton of the Bellingham Herald. “Six weeks after the abortion, the girl told a detective how she had really become pregnant.”
According to court documents, Gonzalez-Jose asked the girl “if it was OK to have a baby with him.” The child said it was not, at which time he stripped her clothes off and raped her, reported Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Elizabeth Gallery.
In April Gonzalez-Jose had pleaded guilty to second-degree rape of a child. (The story mentions that the girl’s family refused to cooperate with prosecutors but offers no further details.)
The plea bargain was agreed to by department evaluators. Gonzalez-Jose, who is in the country illegally, will serve six years in prison “but only on the condition that Gonzalez-Jose can never return to the United States afterward,” Hutton reported. “Otherwise, the report stated, a longer sentence would be appropriate.” Superior Court Judge Charles Snyder approved the plea deal last week.
