The Democratic National Convention—Part Four: NARAL’s Keenan to praise President Obama

By Dave Andrusko

NARAL President Nancy Keenan and President Obama

Exactly the moment I began Part Four, I saw the email from Nancy Keenan, president of NARAL, reminding her supporters that she would be speaking “on your behalf” Wednesday night at the Democratic National Convention. As if anyone needed it, this was a quick reminder that pro-abortionists by the bushel full will be on display these next three days, glorifying President Obama and imputing positions to pro-life Mitt Romney he does not hold.

However, just for a moment, let’s guess what Keenan will studiously avoid mentioning about her hero, President Obama.

How about Obama’s behavior while an Illinois state Senator when he consistently opposed bills to provide legal protections for infants born alive during abortions? That position is held by probably 2% of the population, which is why Keenan will manage not to mention it to the American people.

It will be interesting to see if even Keenan brings up Obama’s opposition to a recent House of Representatives’ bill to prohibit performing or coercing abortions to eliminate unborn babies of an undesired sex–almost always girls. Or Obama’s silence on another House bill to replace the District of Columbia’s policy of abortion for any reason until birth with a ban on abortion after 20 weeks fetal age (the beginning of the sixth month, the point at which science demonstrates that  the unborn child has the capacity to experience great pain), except to save the life of the mother.

But dressed up in protective rhetorical clothing, Keenan might mention other “victories” which came courtesy of President Obama. A partial list (there is so much to choose from) would include some of the items NARAL mentioned in a press release –translated out of abortion-speak into English:

Obama’s repeal of the Mexico City policy under which funds in the U.S. “population assistance” program went only to overseas organizations that pledged not to “perform or actively promote abortion as a method of family planning.” The repeal put hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars into the hands of organizations that aggressively promote abortion as a population-control tool in the developing world.

President Obama not only refunded the UNFPA, he boosted spending for it. As National Right to Life has made clear, “The UNFPA is a cheerleader and facilitator for China’s birth-quota program, which relies heavily on coerced abortion. Top UNFPA officials have been completely cozy with China’s birth-quota bosses. For 20 years, top UNFPA leaders have consistently praised China’s program and attacked its critics.”

Keenan could congratulate Obama for pledging to veto the “No Taxpayer Funding of Abortion Act” (H.R. 3). H.R. 3 would codify the principles of the Hyde Amendment on a permanent, government-wide basis, applicable to both longstanding federal health programs and to the new programs created by ObamaCare. Likewise for attacking the Protect Life Act (H.R. 358) which would nullify the multiple abortion-expanding provisions of the ObamaCare.

Keenan could give Obama high-fives for doing everything he could to eliminate conscience protections;

And Keenan will likely save her most lavish praise for the Obama Administration’s mandate that religious institutions and individuals of conscience pay for health insurance plans that cover medical procedures and drugs contrary to their religious beliefs and consciences.

Keenan will likely swaddle ObamaCare–which will provide funding for health plans that pay for abortion on demand—into what POLITICO describes as a “larger conversation” about “women’s health.”

Keenan will surely reiterate what is by now a truism: that the choice between President and Obama and Gov. Romney is  “clear and stark.” Pro-lifers will be doing their best to make sure the American public knows who stands for life and who stands for death.
