NRLC President Carol Tobias

A report last year in the British medical journal, The Lancet reported that  there are 914 girls younger than six for every 1,000 boys – the lowest ratio since 1947. And, according to CNN, “selective abortion accounts for 2-4 percent of female pregnancy and the practice has increased by a massive 170 percent in the last decade.”

In this week’s final edition of Pro-Life Perspective, National Right to Life President and PLP Host Carol Tobias uses the real-life case of Amisha Bhatt to illustrate just how widespread is sex-selection abortion, even though that is illegal under India’s Pre-Conception & Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act. “The Act,” Mrs. Tobias says, “was put in place to prevent the rampant sex-selection abortions in the country which have claimed the lives countless baby girls.”

You will want to listen to the entire five-minute broadcast at www.prolifepespective.com. In broad strokes, according to a story written by Parth Shastri for The Times of India, Bhatt “was forced to go for abortion not once but six times by her in-laws as they were obsessed for a male heir.”

But she is using those tragedies to attack this discriminatory (and illegal practice).  Bhatt “has exposed this heinous practice in clinics located across India,” according to The Times of India. The article explains that she has already filed a police case against her husband of 12 years and his family, but wanted to expose the ongoing practice in direct defiance of the laws established to protect Indian women and their unborn baby girls.

Mrs. Tobias remarks that The Times of India reports “that as a result of Bhatt’s brave expose, the licenses of two doctors were cancelled for malpractice and the government reviewed the requirements for doctors to submit their monthly reports.”
