Thursday—a Vote on the Pro-Life Blunt Amendment. Please Contact your Two U.S. Senators

By Dave Andrusko

Senator Roy Blunt

As you’ve read in the Action Alert (“Call Now — U.S. senators to vote March 1 on pro-life Blunt Amendment!”), the Senate is about to take action on an important pro-life issue. The amendment “would amend the Obama health care law (‘ObamaCare’) to prevent the imposition of regulatory mandates that violate the religious or moral convictions of those who purchase or provide health insurance, such as the recent decree that virtually all employers — including religiously affiliated hospitals and schools — must purchase health insurance plans that cover all government-approved methods of birth control.”

We’ve written about the Obama mandate repeatedly, because of its intrinsic threat to religious freedoms and liberties and because of what it portends if President Obama is re-elected to a second term—mandating that virtually all health plans pay for elective abortion on demand.

It’s very important that you read the Action Alert, respond, AND pass it along to pro-life friends, so I will just make two points.

Up to and including the day of the November 6 elections you will repeatedly read in the mainstream media and endlessly hear on the network news how clever the President has been, how Obama “boxed in” opponents by turning this outrageous abridgement of religious liberties into a referendum on contraception. That simply is not true, and no matter how many times this distortion is repackaged, we know the truth WILL win out.

Perhaps the story that best illustrates how the threat is to the religious liberties of all faiths was titled “’Unilaterally redefining what it means to be religious’: Religious leaders and scholars express their resistance to Obama Mandate at Congressional Hearing.” I am re-running these excerpts from a number of faith groups because they are very astute and very helpful in dispelling the myth that the mandate is opposed only by Catholics.

With respect to our single-issue focus, the debate is NOT about the specific parameters of the mandate. As the Action Alert makes clear, “Exactly the same statutory authority could be used by the Administration — as early as next year — to mandate that virtually all health plans pay for elective abortion on demand.” In 2009 NRLC warned about the dangers of a provision dealing with “preventive health services” when ObamaCare was under consideration in the Senate. (For additional specifics, see the Alert and www.nationalrighttolifenews.org/news/2012/02/new-obama-scam-you-must-pay-but-nobody-pays-lays-groundwork-for-future-national-abortion-mandate. )

Second, “The Blunt Amendment goes to the heart of the problem by amending the ObamaCare law itself, to prevent provisions of the law from being used as a basis for regulatory mandates that violate the religious or moral convictions of those who purchase or provide health insurance.”

Again, please read the Action Alert, respond, AND pass it along to pro-life friends.
