Man gets 25 years to life sentence in slaying of girlfriend and unborn child

By Dave Andrusko

In a sentencing hearing that lasted more than two hours, Michael LaBrunda was sentenced Wednesday to 25 years to life in state prison. LaBrunda admitted strangling Alisha Chapman, his pregnant girlfriend, killing her and her 4-month-old unborn baby.

“Prosecutors argued LaBrunda choked Chapman to death because she allegedly disrespected him during an argument while they were sitting in a car,” according to Andrew Blankstein of the Los Angeles Times. More than 20 people addressed the judge, giving victim-impact statements.

Los Angeles prosecutors said that LaBrunda pleaded guilty to first-degree murder–for killing 21-year-old Alisha Chapman on Oct. 10, 2007–and second-degree murder–for killing the baby.
