Providence, RI–In a front-page article in today’s Providence Journal, local abortion industry representatives concede that ultrasound informed consent legislation does not force abortionists to perform any new procedures.

Abortionist Pablo Rodriguez and Jenny Carillo, a senior vice president for the regional affiliate of Planned Parenthood — the nation’s largest abortion provider — admit that ultrasounds are already “standard care” prior to an abortion.

According to Barth E. Bracy, executive director of the Rhode Island State Right to Life Committee, “Their admission contradicts the misinformation spread by abortion advocates during the past week in opposition to the Ultrasound Informed Consent Act sponsored for the past four years by state Rep. Karen L. MacBeth (D-Cumberland). Now we only hope they will agree that the principles of informed consent require them to share these ultrasounds with their patients.”

Bracy explains that, “In legitimate medical procedures, the standard of care is for health care professionals to provide patients with as much information as possible. It is absurd to speak of informed consent if accurate medical information, such as that provided by an obstetric ultrasound, is withheld. Why should abortionists not be held to the same standards of informed consent demanded in the practice of real health care?”

The Supreme Court of the United States recognized, in Planned Parenthood v Casey, that informed consent laws reduce “the risk that a woman may elect an abortion, only to discover later, with devastating psychological consequences, that her decision was not fully informed.”

“In short,” concludes Bracy, “ultrasound informed consent laws are pro-woman and pro-information, and have been upheld by the courts. The laws require no new procedure and cost nobody anything, except perhaps those who earn their money selling abortions.”
