It seems like months ago, but it actually was just a few weeks ago that Planned Parenthood battered the Komen Race for the Cure into submission. National Right to Life President and Pro-Life Perspective Host Carol Tobias reviews what the Wall Street Journal’s James Taranto likened to a “classic shakedown operation.”
For those who may have missed some or all of the controversy, Mrs. Tobias cites just a few examples of media piling on. Any illusions about media objectivity were left in the dust early. Mrs. Tobias quotes New York Times columnist Ross Douthat who—talking about MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell—said she “dressed down the Komen foundation’s founder, Nancy Brinker…” by taking it upon herself to “represent” the millions of Americans she characterized as “angered” and “outraged.”
Douthat was not exaggerating when he wrote, “From the nightly news shows to print and online media, the coverage’s tone alternated between wonder and outrage – wonder that anyone could possible find Planned Parenthood even remotely controversial and outrage that the Komen foundation had ‘politicized’ the cause of women’s health.”
Of course through all this the ultimate PPFA objective was to hide its deep involvement—its financial dependence—in abortion. Rarely (ever?) did you read or hear that PPFA is the largest abortion provider in the world; that it performs over 332,000 abortions annually; that nearly one in eight women who come to PPFA for xx have abortions, and so on and so on. All this disguised by the totally misleading cliché that “abortion accounts for just 3 percent of its services.”
Mrs. Tobias concludes her discussion (found at www.prolifeperspective.com) with this important observation:
“Right-to-life supporters don’t want our donations to fight cancer going to organizations that perform abortions. First, pray that Komen and similar cancer fighting organizations stand firm in giving their resources to community groups that fight cancer. Second, continue to respectfully urge Komen and others to steer future grants away from Planned Parenthood and its affiliates. And third, do all you can to educate your friends and family about Planned Parenthood’s true mission and agenda.
What Planned Parenthood does, is abortion. As Douthat wrote in the Times, “Planned Parenthood likes to claim that abortion accounts for just 3 percent of its services…and this statistic has been endlessly recycled in the press. In their 2010 annual report, Planned Parenthood reported performing 329,445 abortions – which represent a little more than a quarter of all abortions in the United States.”
Another stark reminder of how invested PPFA is in abortion, more than nine out of the 10 women who receive services specifically for pregnant women (abortion, adoption, prenatal care) are sold abortions!
Remember, when you think Planned Parenthood, think abortion.
