and former Senator Rick Santorum”]It’s now official: former Senator Rick Santorum is enough of a bother to the New York Times for its editorial page editor, Andrew Rosenthal, to pen a classic hit piece on the Republican presidential candidate, complete with a photo that makes an unrecognizable Santorum look possessed. Like his Republican rivals—former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, former Speaker Newt Gingrich, and Rep. Ron Paul—Santorum is pro-life, which is reason enough for Rosenthal to go off the deep end.

That same New York Times published a poll today (with CBS) of Republican primary voters nationally that shows Santorum has the support of 30%, closely followed by Romney at 27%. Paul is now in third at 12% with Gingrich rounding out the field with 10%. A three point margin is with the poll’s margin of error.

This on the heels of two polls which also show a very close race: Gallup has  Romney ahead by two points while Pew Research has Santorum up two point.

A month ago when the same poll asked voters a slightly different question, Romney led with 28% of Republican primary voters with 21% giving the nod to Gingrich and 16% for Santorum. As Ed Morrissey noted, however, the poll is of registered voters, not likely voters, and while the overall sample was 1,064 registered voters,  only 331 of those planned to vote in a Republican primary—not a huge sample for a national poll.

Moreover, in yet another indication of how fluid the contest remains, six in ten who expressed a preference also said they could still change their minds.
