It was probably foolish, but I thought I might get a fresh perspective on the debate over abortion if I were to read an opinion piece written for Canada’s largest paper, the Globe and Mail. No such luck.
Sonia Verma pigeon-holed the tremendous response generated by PPFA’s all-guns-blasting attack on Komen for the Cure and President Obama’s Mandate scam in the usual categories. (We’ll focus on the latter here.) You know the list by heart.
People are not really motivated by a genuine fear of an out-of-control Obama Administration’s assault on religious liberties. Nor do they really believe—as many organizations, including (firstly) National Right to Life that the logic of mandating that insurers provide coverage for contraceptive can easily be applied to a mandate in a second Obama term to require abortion coverage.
“President Obama promulgated a scam that, if he is re-elected, will allow him to mandate that every health plan in America cover abortion on demand,” NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson has explained. “The same twisted logic will be applied: By ordering health plans to cover elective abortion, health plans would save the much higher costs of prenatal care, childbirth, and care for the baby — and under the Obama scam, if a procedure saves money, then that means that you’re not really paying for it when the government mandates it.”
Naw, it’s all about politicians using the controversy to “mobilize” or “fire up” a portion of their base. Really? Really, according to Sonia Verma.
But are pro-lifers, people of faith, defenders of the Constitution—to name just three categories—either that naïve or that unsophisticated? Of course not. We understand there are politics involved, to be sure, only they were spawned in the offices of the White House.
Some would have us believe that President Obama stumbled into issuing a mandate compelling Catholic universities, hospitals, and charities to paying for health insurance that covers sterilization. Or that he inadvertently came up with a “compromise” that just happened to solve none of the objections that opponents had voiced.
In fact, Obama’s initial proposal and its phony distinction-without-a-difference second pass was calculated to appease his base and to attempt to convince the American people that he had made a good-faith attempt to find accommodate everyone. At this very moment, Obama’s legion of media fans are trying not to laugh out loud as they convince themselves that Obama has boxed his opponents into a corner.
The President and his allies really believe that you and I (and tens of millions of others) will eventually quiet down, and the “controversy” will die down, leaving him stronger than ever. But truth be told, the truth usually wins out.
Which is why I write about this every day, and why the storm, far from blowing over, will grow more and more intense.
