What’s Airing on Pro-Life Perspective This Week? “Saving Lives From Doctor-Proscribed Death”

NRLC President Carol Tobias

National Right to Life President and Pro-Life Perspective Host Carol Tobias ends the week with a sobering look at the “slippery slope” in Europe. So-called “safeguards” were never intended to be anything more than temporary speed bumps, and as time has passed the killing has picked up speed and new categories of victims.

For example, the British newspaper, The Daily Mail, reported that the practice of killing patients with dementia is on the rise, and is being documented.  “A report released earlier this year revealed a total of 21 patients with early-stage dementia, including Alzheimer’s died by lethal injection in Holland in 2010. This is the first time dementia sufferers have been included in the country’s euthanasia statistics.”

Even so, Mrs. Tobias asks, “Does this pose a threat to those in the United States? After all, assisting suicide is currently legal in only two states–-Oregon and Washington–and may have some legal basis in the state of Montana, due to a 2010 court decision.”

The bulk of today’s five-minute broadcast is to alert her listeners to an aggressive push by proponents of doctor-prescribed death to move into the Northeast, specifically Massachusetts and Vermont. And as bad as that is on its own, Mrs. Tobias reminds us of additional sobering truth.

Over and over again courts have ruled that if competent patients have a particular “right,” the Equal Protection Clause of the United States Constitution’s Fourteenth Amendment requires that incompetent people be “given” the same “right.” As night follows day physician-assisted suicide, over time, leads to the nonvoluntary euthanizing of patients—patients who neither requested nor authorized their deaths. Just check out the Netherlands.
