Pennsylvania Close to Passing Two Pro-Life Bills

By Dave Andrusko

After sloughing through a pile of obstacles, pro-lifers in Pennsylvania have taken an important step forward on two bills.

The state House gave final approval yesterday (146-45) to a bill that would move Pennsylvania another step closer to joining  the eight  other states that have opted  out of abortion funding in the insurance exchanges created by ObamaCare. When we recently asked Maria Vitale Gallagher, Education Director for the Pennsylvania Pro-Life Federation, for an update, she said, “Congress said states have the right to opt out of abortion coverage and we want to ensure that for the state of Pennsylvania.” She added, “Public opinion polls have consistently shown that Americans do not want public funding of abortion, and that is also true in Pennsylvania.  The legislation would simply continue a long-standing policy preventing government-subsidized abortion in the Keystone State.”

The measure now goes to the state Senate.

And then there is the measure some call the “Gosnell bill,” after Philadelphia abortionist Kermit Gosnell who stands charged with eight counts of murder. This, too, passed the House yesterday. If agreed to by the Senate and signed into law by Gov. Corbett, it would require that abortion facilities abide by the safety standards of ambulatory surgical facilities.

The passage of the bill “is a response to the atrocities which took place at abortionist Kermit Gosnell’s Women’s Medical Society,” said Gallagher. “Gosnell and his unlicensed staff are charged with the murders of seven newborn babies and one female patient, but the grand jury believes that Gosnell was actually responsible for the deaths of hundreds of babies, while harming untold numbers of women.”

For far too long, abortion facilities have been operating in the dark, she said. “The women of Pennsylvania deserve better, and enhanced oversight of abortion centers is long overdue.”
