UNFPA: Active in China’s Coercive Population Control Policies

By Dave Andrusko

Yesterday we ran the stirring remarks of Congressman Chris Smith (R-NJ) during a voting session of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives on H.R. 2059. Authored by Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC), this NRLC-backed bill would cut off U.S. funds to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA).  The bill was subsequently approved by the committee, 23-17.

Once you read those remarks, which included heartbreaking testimony from women who have suffered grievously under China’s one-child policy, you’d quickly understand why Sarah Craven, chief of the Washington office of the UNFPA, would tell the Huffington Post , “Not one dime of U.S. money goes to China, and not one dime goes to abortion.”

You can understand why UNFPA would desperately attempt to distance itself from a program of coercive abortion and involuntary sterilization. And as is ALWAYS the case when pro-abortionists are caught, they insist opposition to these horrific abridgements of human rights are really an attack on “family planning.”

But as National Right to Life has pointed out repeatedly, despite disingenuous disclaimers that it does not “provide” abortions, the United Nations Population Fund the UNFPA has for decades been a cheerleader for, and an active participant in China’s ruthless birth-quota system, which relies heavily upon involuntary abortion. Moreover UNPFA is, in reality, chief among the multilateral entities that are aggressively seeking to undermine protections for unborn children throughout the developing world.

Moreover, there are remarks that Rep. Smith began his own comments with yesterday. They are from John Negroponte, Deputy Secretary of State, who

stated in a June 26, 2008 State Department determination denying U.S. funds to the UNFPA that “all UNFPA programming related to contraception and reproductive health incorporates, and defers to, Chinese law and regulation. The national law and the provincial regulations are a framework for China’s coercive birth policies.” (emphasis added)

As this battle is joined, don’t allow anyone you know to buy the pro-abortion line that UNFPA’s hands are clean.
