Believe it or Not

By Dave Andrusko

The headline in the “Believe it or Not: News and trends from the religious realm” section of the Houston Chronicle read, “From Planned Parenthood to picket lines: Why women convert to ‘pro-life’.” Written by Kate Shellnutt it is a brief but thoughtful exploration of why another Planned Parenthood employee in Texas, Ramona Trevino, followed the path broken by Abby Johnson.

Surprise, surprise, one reason was Johnson and her book, unPlanned: The Dramatic True Story of a Former Planned Parenthood Leader’s Eye-Opening Journey Across the Life Lines which we have written about numerous times.

“I identified with her, and I felt her desire to help women. That’s why we both started working at Planned Parenthood in the first place,” Trevino told Shellnutt. While Trevino’s clinic did not perform abortion, it did abortion referrals.

What else? Her oldest daughter entered the teenage years!

Beyond the good news that Trevino had now switched sides (she is a spokeswoman for a pro-life organization), last week the clinic she worked at for three years closed.

Perhaps the most interesting comment was Trevino’s response to the question “Are there more people like Trevino and Johnson, working at Planned Parenthood despite reservations over the organization’s services?” Trevino said, “Absolutely.”
