What the Latest Gallup Numbers Tell Us about “Areas of Agreement”

By Dave Andrusko

I meant to discuss this yesterday and only have time to mention it in passing today (more in depth tomorrow, promise). Under the headline “Plenty of Common Ground Found in Abortion Debate,” Gallup’s Lydia Saad, who has written about the company’s abortion polling for years, leads off her  summary of the findings with this sentence: “Self-described ‘pro-choice’ and ‘pro-life’ Americans agree about nine major areas of abortion policy, while disagreeing on eight others”.

Saad says that the most “contentious” area is abortion for financial reasons, followed by abortion in cases where the baby is suspected to have mental or physical impairments or when the mother’s mental health “is at stake.”

So, by way of a quick overview, what can we say? There is agreement among a majority of self–identified pro-lifers and “pro-choicers” over the traditional “tough” cases: life, physical health, or in cases of rape and incest. It is important to know that most likely most people think of “physical health” as very serious, because the word ‘endangered’ follows.

Likewise, both agree that women need to be informed and that there ought to be a 24-hour waiting period—important since the Abortion Movement opposes both with every fiber in its collective body—and in parental consent. In addition they opposed third trimester abortion, second-trimester abortion, and partial-birth abortion.

On Wednesday we will probe more deeply into the numbers and analyze what they mean for us.
