Vice President Joe Biden’s Ill-Fated Remarks in Support of China’s One Child/Family Policy

Pro-Abortion Vice President Joe Biden

Editor’s note. Vice President Biden’s indefensible, off-the-wall comments about China’s coercive one-child policy took place while I was gone. But it’s important to remind readers what National Right to Life said at the time—and add a few words of additional commentary. In Part Two I’ve reprinted the remarks of pro-life champion Congressman Chris Smith, the chairman of Congressional Executive Commission on China. First, NRLC’s remarks.

Vice President Joe Biden is famous for sticking his foot in his mouth. He did it again the other day when he excused China’s policy of brutally enforcing a limit of one child for most families.

How did the Obama Administration respond to Joe’s latest blathering? They trotted out a lower-level spokesperson to embarrass the Vice President of the United States by publicly correcting him, stating that the Administration really opposes China using forced abortions and sterilizations to enforce the policy.

Oh, really? Did the Administration “oppose” the policy when it refused to comment about the abuses after official visits with Chinese leaders by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Obama himself?

National Right to Life leaders actually showed ultrasound images of unborn babies, displayed fetal models and passed out Precious Feet pins at a U.N. conference in China. If the Administration is so opposed to forced abortion, where is their similar sense of courage to speak up against it?

All we’ve heard from a ranking official of any kind is Biden stating “I fully understand” China’s position and “I’m not second-guessing” the brutal policy.  Just another example of the Administration’s hypocrisy — say one thing, do another.

There must have been something dropped into the water; one truly whacko statement after another from the Obama Administration. From our single-issue perspective, the most gagging observation was Vice President Biden’s comments to Chinese students at Sichuan University in Chengdu, China. Based on the official transcript put out by the State Department, Biden was responding to questions and made a comparison between the United States and China—both facing the prospect of many retirees and not enough workers. Our situation is because of lower fertility rates and longer lifespans. For China?

“Your policy has been one which I fully understand—I’m not second-guessing—of one child per family,” Biden said. “The result being that you’re in a position where one wage earner will be taking care of four retired people.  Not sustainable.”

Headlines often are very revealing. I remember catching up on stories and commentary last week and being startled by the headline to a National Public Radio piece.  “Biden’s comment on China’s one-child policy spurs anti-abortion ire” it read. Only “anti-abortionists” can be opposed to decades of systematic brutality and abridgement of the most basic human rights?

Two closing thoughts. First, after a couple of days of silence in the face of mounting criticism, a Biden spokeswoman lamely said, “The Obama administration strongly opposes all aspects of China’s coercive birth-limitation policies, including forced abortion and sterilization. The vice president believes such practices are repugnant.” They didn’t even have the courage of their cowardly and wrong-headed convictions.

Second, as Congressman Smith points out in his statement, Biden’s morally blinkered comment must be seen in the larger context of an Administration which has made it clear it is not going to allow a little thing like forced abortion, sterilization, or infanticide to get in the way of its commercial agenda. Particularly callous are the comments of Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Every time you think Obama and his pro-abortion-to-the-hilt administration has reached bottom, it dredges still deeper.
