Editor’s note. The following overview of NRL’s exciting national convention comes from West Virginians for Life.
Members of West Virginians for Life traveled to Jacksonville, Florida, June 23-25 for “Bringing America Back to Life,” National Right to Life’s 41st annual convention, for sessions conducted by some of the pro-life movement’s top experts and networking with pro-lifers from across the country and around the world. Guest speakers at this year’s annual convention included Fred Barnes, executive editor of The Weekly Standard and a Fox News contributor; abortion survivor Melissa Ohden; former Planned Parenthood clinic director Abby Johnson; and photojournalist Michael Clancy. The latter two have been keynote speakers at the WVFL annual Rose Dinner events.
“It is more important today than ever to continue in this struggle to protect life at all stages,” said Mary Anne Buchanan, Communications Director of West Virginians for Life (WVFL). “As Americans, we are making great leaps in this fight for a culture of life.”
Buchanan added, “Although it has been shown time and again that Americans are more pro-life, the fact remains that there is still so much to learn,” there is still work to be done. We must redouble our efforts to combat pro-abortion laws, especially in healthcare that targets not only the unborn and the elderly but every human being. The fight continues and we come together to arm ourselves with proper education and further knowledge of what we are up against.”
Public opinion polling continues to show that as more Americans are educated about abortion’s grim realities and the humanity of the unborn child, they are embracing pro-life opinions. A November 2010 poll by The Polling Company found that 53% of voters believe that abortion should be prohibited in either all cases or except for specific cases, such as to save the life of the mother or in the cases of rape or incest. Gallup found essentially the same results in their May 2011 poll which found 61% of the country believing abortion should either never be legal or legal only in a few circumstances. Gallup also found that 51% of U.S. adults believe that abortion is morally wrong as opposed to 39% who believe it is morally acceptable.
“We truly are bringing America back to life,” Buchanan said.”When we see that 61% of U.S. adults believing abortion should be limited to only a few circumstances, we know that the nation’s pro-life voice is growing stronger the voices of the culture of death becoming less and less audible. Women deserve better than abortion, America deserves better than abortion and we are given true hope when we see these statistics.”
