Wisconsin Right to Life is praising Governor Scott Walker and the state legislature for passing a state budget containing two budget provisions strongly promoted by Wisconsin Right to Life.
“Governor Walker and the state legislature acted courageously to protect Wisconsin taxpayers from having their tax dollars used to destroy human life,” said Susan Armacost, Legislative Director of Wisconsin Right to Life.
The first budget provision cut off a substantial amount of tax dollars to abortion providers like Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin by directing family planning dollars under the Title V program to public health Departments. The counties “may not provide either state or federal Title V funds to providers that provide abortion services or abortion referrals, or any providers that have affiliates that provide abortion services or abortion referrals.”
The second provision prohibits UW Hospitals and Clinics from using public funds for abortion. Under this prohibition UW can no longer pay medical students to learn to perform abortions, and it eliminates any further consideration of the ill-fated late-term abortion plan attempted by UW in the past few years. This provision makes the UW Hospitals and Clinics Authority subject to “provisions of current law that prohibit the use of public funds to pay a physician or surgeon or a hospital, clinic or medical facility for the performance of an abortion except in certain cases specified in current law.”
“While there is more work to be done to protect taxpayers from paying for abortions, this state budget has greatly improved the situation. On behalf of Wisconsin Right to Life members and supporters throughout the state, we extend our heartfelt thanks to Governor Walker and the legislature,” said Armacost.
