A “Sister Souljah” moment already?

By Dave Andrusko

Although this took place 19 years ago, when I read “Obama attacked on abortion — by abortion rights groups” in this morning’s USA Today, I immediately remembered the 1992 dustup between the ultra-crafty Bill Clinton and “Sister Souljah.”  The specifics are not important, signified by the fact that a “Sister Souljah moment” has become part of the political lexicon.

This refers to a politician’s patently phony attempt to distance himself from a too-close association with a base constituency by criticizing some outlandish statement made by someone on fringe of that constituency. The idea is that “centrists” will see you as a middle-of-the-roader willing to “speak truth” even to your allies.

But the appellation applies equally well—if not better—when someone who is part of a core constituency independently accuses a politician of heresy rather than vice versa.

As the headline signifies pro-abortion groups have taken to the pages of the magazine of “Catholics for Choice” to lament that the man who doesn’t take a step on “reproductive health” without consulting with NARALs and PPFAs isn’t really “pro-choice.” (There are several articles about “choice” that have nothing to do with abortion, so I will ignore them.)

If you want you can go to the magazine “Conscience” to read the specifics of the case against Barack Obama.  I am perfectly willing to concede that they might be sincere; they are just radically wrong.

The gist of their argument is that Obama got off to a promising start, then failed to lead pro-abortionists to the promised land where every abortion clinic in America is operating at full capacity (on your money) and where the anti-life virus is spread to every nook and cranny across the globe.

There is also nostalgia for pro-abortion Secretary of State (and 2008 rival) Hillary Clinton who straight out told Rep. Chris Smith that, yes, “reproductive health” includes abortion. As if Barack Obama didn’t say the equivalent in his July 17th, 2007 speech before the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

President Obama is as strongly pro-abortion as President George W. Bush was strongly pro-life. We just need to keep reminding our friends, family, and colleagues of this truth as a handful of pro-abortionists seek to blur the distinction.
