There are any number of ways of attempting to gauge a President’s public approval, the most customary being a straight up approval/disapproval numbers. But Rasmussen Reports also offers what amounts to an intensity gauge: what it calls the “Presidential Approval Index.”
For the overall numbers, 44% of voters “say they at least somewhat approve of the president’s performance,” according to Rasmussen. “Fifty-five percent (55%) disapprove.” Not good.
But the “Presidential Approval Index”–this is even worse. Rasmussen arrives at the Presidential Approval Index by subtracting the number who Strongly Disapprove from the number who Strongly Approve of President Obama.
For Monday, April 11, that figure is a MINUS 20.In other words, 39% strongly disapprove of President Obama to only 19% who strongly approve.
Tucked away in the numbers is an interesting irony, confusion, or maybe example of public shrewdness—I’m not entirely sure which. Rasmussen tells us that “Currently, just 37% of liberals Strongly Approve of the president’s performance. That’s down from 63% a year ago, 57% at the beginning of 2011, and 52% a week ago.”
But “While liberal enthusiasm may be declining, 57% of voters believe the president is more liberal than they are.”
My best guess is that the larger public is seeing through President Obama’s attempt to portrait himself as almost a middle-of-the-roader, someone whose opinions are “mainstream.”
That is why the abortion issue is so revealing. Obama pretends to search for common ground even as he attempts to gobble up every square inch for the Abortion Empire.
It’s up to us to remind the public that there is virtually nothing President Obama won’t do not only to keep the abortion engine running but firing on all of its lethal cylinders.
