Four Days from the 40th Anniversary of Roe: A few thoughts
By Dave Andrusko
As I write this post, we are three days away from the inauguration of pro-abortion President Barack Obama, four days away from the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, and one week away from the annual March for Life.
Little needs to be added to all that we have said over the last five plus year about Mr. Obama. He is a formidable foe who will use every anti-life tool in his arsenal to attack pro-life policies, initiate new programs to increase the death toll, and fortify what already exists in order to further the cause of Planned Parenthood, NARAL, EMILY’s List, and the like.
We will oppose him—and them–at every turn.
And what new could we say about Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton, the companion case that amplified and extended and hardened the conclusions Justice Blackmun reached in his Roe opinion?
The triumph of ideology over jurisprudence? Of course. Conclusions in an [unsuccessful] search for evidence? Obviously so. Roe/Doe, the ship that launched 55 million deaths? With more to come, alas.
But that ship has taken on lots and lots of water. Beginning with the 1992 decision in Planned Parenthood v. Casey in particular, the High Court has allowed the states greater leeway. That is why there are so many fights across the nation, and with such ferocity. In minimal doses, the justices have allowed commonsense regulations to prevail.
We will keep coming back to the High Court, testing, probing, and bringing light.
Finally, it’s been my privilege to attend every March for Life since 1982. Last year all three of my daughters were able to be with my wife and myself. Before that, I took part in my state right to life gatherings. Both were terrific.
Some pro-life gatherings have already taken place, but the real rush begins tomorrow. By all means, take part.
Your presence sends an unmistakable message. While our Movement took one on the chin when President Obama won a second term the truth is, as even our benighted opposition knows, that was merely a glancing blow.
Our people—YOU—are indefatigable. And because you are absolutely unwilling to fighting on behalf of the little ones, the greatest Movement for social justice of our time one day will prevail.
