Helping Women Heal from the pain of Abortion
By Mark Pickup
Editor’s note. Mark Pickup is a pro-life disability rights activist who lives in Canada. Mark and his wife, LaRee, have spoken at the annual National Right to Life Convention.
My dear wife LaRee and I just finished speaking to one of the largest western Canadian evangelical Churches in Calgary Alberta: Centre Street Church. We spoke four times over a 24 hour period. Our presentation was simulcast to each of their six affiliate churches throughout the Calgary area. You can see one of our presentations at http://www.cschurch.ca/airdrie/.
(Go to the top right hand corner of the web page and click on “watch sermons” and click on the “Full service, August 12th”. Our presentation took the place of the sermon and begins about half way through.)
LaRee has endured so much over many years but as you can see she shows a brutal honesty, a tender heart and vulnerability. This resonated deeply with the people. From the best we can determine, somewhere between 7,000 & 8,500 people were addressed over the four presentations and 24 hours.
By the taping of this session we were utterly exhausted but feedback was most encouraging. Many post-abortive women and families of people with profound disabilities swamped us after each service.
They were particularly interested in speaking to LaRee. We pray that her willingness to meet them at the need, pain and sorrow — even for a short time — helped them to take the first steps toward spiritual and emotional healing and tap the formidable counselling resources available at this very fine church.
