Pro-Life Forces Make Some Gains, But
Obama
and Senate Democrats Protect Funding for Planned Parenthood
WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 2, 2011)–President Barack Obama and Senate
Democratic leaders were willing to allow the federal government to shut
down, rather than accept a proposal–approved twice by the
Republican-controlled House of Representatives–to cut off federal
funding for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA).
The showdown over Planned Parenthood came in
early April, during negotiations involving Obama, pro-abortion Senate
Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nv.), and pro-life House Speaker John
Boehner (R-Ohio), over legislation to fund the federal government for
the rest of the current fiscal year (which ends on September 30).
A
government-wide funding bill initially passed by the
Republican-controlled House in February (H.R. 1) contained a number of
NRLC-backed pro-life provisions, including an amendment sponsored by
pro-life Rep. Mike Pence (R-In.) to cut off all federal funds from PPFA
and its affiliates. (See “Pro-Life Lawmakers Advance NRLC-Backed
Measures in U.S. House,” February NRL News, page 1.)

Carol Tobias Is New
National Right to Life President
By Dave Andrusko
Carol Tobias, a veteran pro-lifer with a long history of local,
state, and national involvement, has been elected National Right to
Life’s ninth President.
Carol follows Dr. Wanda
Franz, whom she described as a “model of gracious but unyielding
commitment to the protection of innocent unborn human life.” Dr.
Franz served as President for 20 years.
Carol is no stranger to
the members of National Right to Life, to Washington politicians, or
to the media. In 1991, NRL persuaded her to leave her native North
Dakota, where her parents had helped to organize North Dakota Right
to Life (NDRL), to assume the position of political director for
National Right to Life.
During Carol’s service
as National Right to Life Political Director, NRL PAC emerged as a
national pro-life political powerhouse. NRL PAC played a key role in
the election and re-election of pro-life President George W. Bush.

Do You Know Your
National Right to Life?
I’m proud to be part of this
wonderful organization. When I think of everything accomplished by
National Right to Life, its state affiliates, chapters, and grassroots
volunteers, I’m amazed. How much do you really know about the wonderful
organization that you are a part of?
The National Right to Life
Committee (NRLC) is the only single-issue pro-life organization with an
affiliate in every state. We have more than 3,000 chapters of grassroots
volunteers that work within their communities—educating, lobbying state
and federal governments on behalf of pro-life policies, and conducting
political activities to elect pro-life men and women to office.
Let me tell you just some of
what NRLC does on a regular basis.
